Indians have long prided themselves on financial caution. They arrive at airports early, bargain at the corner kirana shop, and for decades treated their savings with the same careful instinct, stashing money in fixed deposits or, less formally, under the mattress.
That instinct is shifting. Rising disposable incomes and declining returns on risk-free deposits have nudged the Indian middle class toward more sophisticated asset classes. Mutual fund assets as a share of bank deposits have climbed to 29.5%, up from 12.6% in March 2015.
The June 26 chartbook traces that migration, using data-driven charts and illustrations to document how Indian households are gradually moving their money from bank branches to Dalal Street.
